This section says which parts of the bankruptcy code apply to which kinds of bankruptcy cases. General rules in chapters 1, 3, and 5 apply broadly, but special chapters — like those for stockbrokers, railroads, or small businesses — only apply to the specific case types they cover.

(a) Except as section 1161 provides, chapters 1, 3, and 5 of this title apply in cases under chapter 7, 11, 12, or 13. This chapter (chapter 1) — along with sections 307, 362(o), 555 through 557, and 559 through 562 — also applies in cases under chapter 15. (b) Subchapters I and II of chapter 7 apply only in cases under chapter 7. (c) Subchapter III of chapter 7 applies only in a chapter 7 case involving a stockbroker. (d) Subchapter IV of chapter 7 applies only in a chapter 7 case involving a commodity broker. (e) Scope of Application. Subchapter V of chapter 7 applies only in a chapter 7 case liquidating an uninsured state member bank, or a corporation set up under section 25A of the Federal Reserve Act that runs, or acts as, a multilateral clearing organization under a listed section of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Improvement Act of 1991. (f) Except as section 901 provides, only chapters 1 and 9 apply in a chapter 9 case. (g) Except as section 901 provides, subchapters I, II, and III of chapter 11 apply only in a chapter 11 case. (h) Subchapter IV of chapter 11 applies only in a chapter 11 case involving a railroad. (i) Subchapter V of chapter 11 applies only in a chapter 11 case where the debtor, as section 1182 defines that term, chooses for subchapter V to apply. (j) Chapter 13 applies only in a chapter 13 case. (k) Chapter 12 applies only in a chapter 12 case. (l) Chapter 15 applies only in a chapter 15 case, except that (1) sections 1505, 1513, and 1514 apply in every case under this title, and (2) section 1509 applies whether or not any case under this title is pending.
