16 U.S.C. § 262 — Total area; consent of Congress to acquisition of lands and property and transfer thereof to United States

This section sets the size and boundaries of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, established under this subchapter. The park's total area must be at least 6,000 acres and no more than 50,000 acres, and land may be added to the park after it's created, as long as it stays within those limits. The park can't include any land inside the city limits of Middlesboro or Pineville, Kentucky, or Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, that those cities' officials tell the Secretary of the Interior they need for the cities to grow, before the park is established. (a) Congress consents to Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia making a compact (an agreement between states) to do two things: acquire the land, structures, and other property in the Cumberland Gap–Cumberland Ford areas described in section 261 of this title, and then transfer ownership of that land, those structures, and that property to the United States. (b) Congress keeps the right to change, amend, or cancel this section at any time.
