16 U.S.C. § 460w — Establishment; boundaries

This section creates the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Ashland and Bayfield Counties, Wisconsin. The goal is to conserve and develop certain islands, shoreline, and light stations — along with their scenery, history, and scientific value — for the public's benefit, education, and enjoyment. (a) In general: The lakeshore's core area is the land shown on an official map called "Apostle Islands National Lakeshore," numbered NL–AI–91,000, sheets 1 and 2, dated June 1970. (b) Long Island addition: The lakeshore also includes about 200 acres of land called "Long Island," at the mouth of Chequamegon Bay. This area is shown on a map numbered NL–AI–91,001, dated December 1985. (c) Ashland Harbor Breakwater Light: (1) The lakeshore includes the Ashland Harbor Breakwater Light, at the end of the breakwater on Chequamegon Bay. It's shown on a map dated February 11, 2014. (2) Congress says that adding this lighthouse to the lakeshore does not create any protective buffer zone around it. The maps are kept on file and open for public viewing at the office of the Director of the National Park Service, in the Department of the Interior.
