18 U.S.C. § 554 — Smuggling goods from the United States

This section punishes exporting or helping export goods in violation of United States law when the required knowledge or fraud is present. It provides a maximum prison term of 10 years and allows a fine, imprisonment, or both.
(a) Anyone who fraudulently or knowingly exports, sends, or tries to export or send merchandise, an article, or an object from the United States contrary to a United States law or regulation may be fined under this title, imprisoned for up to 10 years, or both. The same penalties apply before exportation to anyone who knowingly receives, hides, buys, sells, or otherwise helps transport, hide, or sell such an item knowing it is intended for illegal export. (b) In this section, “United States” has the meaning given in section 545. This section does not define that term.
Whoever fraudulently or knowingly exports or sends from the United States, or attempts to export or send from the United States, any merchandise, article, or object contrary to any law or regulation of the United States, or receives, conceals, buys, sells, or in any manner facilitates the transportation, concealment, or sale of such merchandise, article or object, prior to exportation, knowing the same to be intended for exportation contrary to any law or regulation of the United States, shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 10 years, or both.
In this section, the term “United States” has the meaning given that term in section 545.
