20 U.S.C. § 932 — Definitions

For purposes of this chapter: (1) “Dependent” means a minor person who (A) has not finished secondary school, and (B) is the sponsor’s child, stepchild, adopted child, ward, or spouse, or lives in the sponsor’s household while the sponsor acts as a parent and provides at least half of the person’s support. (2) “Sponsor” means a person (A) who is (i) an active-duty Armed Forces member, or (ii) a full-time civilian Department of Defense officer or employee who is a United States citizen or national, and (B) who may transport dependents to or from an overseas area at government expense and receives a living-quarters allowance there. (3) “Overseas area” means any area outside the United States. (4) Geographically, “United States” means the States, District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and United States possessions, but not the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands or Midway Island. (5) “Involuntarily separated” has the meaning given in section 1141 of title 10. (6) “Director” means the Director of the Department of Defense Education Activity.
