29 U.S.C. § 654 — Duties of employers and employees

Employers must provide employees with work and workplaces free from recognized hazards likely to cause death or serious physical harm. Employers and employees must follow applicable occupational safety and health requirements.
(a) Each employer*—(1) must give each employee* work and a workplace free from recognized hazards that are causing, or are likely to cause, death or serious physical harm; and (2) must follow occupational safety and health standards issued under this chapter.
(b) Each employee must follow the occupational safety and health standards, rules, regulations, and orders issued under this chapter that apply to the employee’s own actions and conduct.
Each employer*—
shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees;
shall comply with occupational safety and health standards promulgated under this chapter.
Each employee* shall comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued pursuant to this chapter which are applicable to his own actions and conduct.
