This section defines “dependent,” “missing status,” and “pay and allowances” for this chapter. It lists the people included as dependents, the statuses included as missing status, and the types of pay and allowances covered.
In this chapter—
(1) “Dependent,” for a member* of a uniformed service, means—
(A) the member’s spouse;
(B) the member’s unmarried child, including an unmarried dependent stepchild or adopted child, under 21 years of age;
(C) the member’s dependent mother or father;
(D) a dependent designated in official records; and
(E) a person determined to be dependent by the Secretary concerned* or that Secretary’s designee.
(2) “Missing status” means the status of a member of a uniformed service who is officially carried or determined to be absent in a status of—
(A) missing;
(B) missing in action;
(C) interned in a foreign country;
(D) captured, beleaguered, or besieged by a hostile force; or
(E) detained in a foreign country against the member’s will.
(3) “Pay* and allowances” means—
(A) basic pay;
(B) special pay;
(C) incentive pay;
(D) basic allowance for housing;
(E) basic allowance for subsistence; and
(F) station per diem allowances for not more than 90 days.
In this chapter:
The term “dependent”, with respect to a member* of a uniformed service, means—
his spouse;
his unmarried child (including an unmarried dependent stepchild or adopted child) under 21 years of age;
his dependent mother or father;
a dependent designated in official records; and
a person determined to be dependent by the Secretary concerned*, or his designee.
The term “missing status” means the status of a member of a uniformed service who is officially carried or determined to be absent in a status of—
missing;
missing in action;
interned in a foreign country;
captured, beleaguered, or besieged by a hostile force; or
detained in a foreign country against his will.
The term “pay* and allowances” means—
basic pay;
special pay;
incentive pay;
basic allowance for housing;
basic allowance for subsistence; and
station per diem allowances for not more than 90 days.
