42 U.S.C. § 16152 — Definitions

(1) "Clean hydrogen" and "hydrogen" both mean hydrogen made in a way that meets the greenhouse-gas standard set under section 16166(a), no matter what fuel source made it. (2) A "fuel cell" is a device that turns a fuel's chemical energy — fuel that comes from an outside source — plus an oxidant, directly into electricity, through electrochemical reactions happening at separate electrodes inside the device. (3) A "heavy-duty vehicle" is a motor vehicle that meets any one of three tests: (A) it's rated at more than 8,500 pounds of gross vehicle weight; (B) its empty (curb) weight is more than 6,000 pounds; or (C) the front area of the vehicle is bigger than 45 square feet. (4) "Infrastructure" means the equipment, systems, or facilities used to produce, move, deliver, or store hydrogen — but not equipment that stores hydrogen onboard a vehicle. (5) A "light-duty vehicle" is a motor vehicle rated at 8,500 pounds of gross vehicle weight or less. (6) When talking about a fuel cell, "portable" and "storage" both cover (A) continuous electric power and (B) backup electric power. (7) The "Task Force" means the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technical Task Force, which section 16155 sets up. (8) The "Technical Advisory Committee" means the independent Technical Advisory Committee that section 16156 sets up.
