The Energy Department must give competitive grants to research teams developing small combined heat-and-power technology for homes. The teams must study using it for home heating, running other appliances, and selling extra power back to the grid.
The Secretary* shall make competitive, merit-based grants to consortia for the development of micro-cogeneration energy technology.
The consortia shall explore—
the use of small-scale combined heat and power in residential heating appliances;
the use of excess power to operate other appliances within the residence; and
the supply of excess generated power to the power grid.
