42 U.S.C. § 17251 — Carbon capture

(a) Program establishment. (1) The Secretary must run a program demonstrating large-scale carbon dioxide capture from industrial sources, choosing a mix of capture technologies to cover different kinds of industrial sources. (2) Awards only pay for the part of a project that captures (including purifying and compressing) carbon dioxide from industrial sources, transports and injects it, and includes a full measurement, monitoring, and validation plan. (3) The Secretary must, without delaying the work, connect this program with the large-scale carbon dioxide sequestration tests under section 16293(c) of this title. The Secretary must give priority to projects that capture a high percentage and large volume of carbon dioxide, and to projects near suitable underground storage sites that could continue on to sequestration, including through section 16293 field tests or other approved sequestration projects. (4) If a project's carbon dioxide will be sequestered, it must be pure enough for safe transport and storage. (5) The cost-sharing rules in section 16352 of this title apply to this section. (b) Authorization of appropriations. Congress authorized $200,000,000 a year for fiscal years 2009 through 2013 to carry out this section.
