42 U.S.C. § 18362 — Retirement of Space Shuttle orbiters and transition of Space Shuttle program

(a) In general. The Administrator must retire the Space Shuttle orbiters according to a schedule the Administrator sets, in a way that's consistent with the rest of this chapter's rules about possibly using orbiters as a backup for ISS needs. (b) Utilization of workforce and assets in follow-on Space Launch System. NASA must handle the leftover workforce and assets in two ways. First, as much as practical, the Administrator must use the Shuttle program's workforce, assets, and infrastructure to help start the follow-on Space Launch System developed under section 18322. Second, for whatever workforce, assets, and infrastructure aren't used that way, the Administrator must work closely with other federal agencies and the private sector to sell off what isn't needed and to help displaced workers get retrained or find new jobs. Money authorized under section 101(2)(B) is available for this work.
