43 U.S.C. § 31d — Advisory committee

(a) Establishment: (1) In general: This subsection creates an 11-member geologic mapping advisory committee. Its job is to advise the Director on planning and carrying out the geologic mapping program. (2) Members ex officio: Four members serve because of the federal office they hold. These are the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (or a designee), the Secretary of the Interior (or a designee from one of Interior's land management agencies), the Secretary of Energy (or a designee), and the Secretary of Agriculture (or a designee). (3) Appointed members: The Secretary of the Interior appoints the rest, after consulting with the Association. That's two representatives from the Survey — one of whom, the Associate Director for Core Science Systems, chairs the committee — plus two representatives from state geological surveys, one representative from academia, and two representatives from the private sector. (b) Duties: The advisory committee has four jobs. (1) Review and update the 5-year plan that the Director writes under section 31e of this title. (2) Review how the geologic mapping program is progressing scientifically. (3) Give a scientific overview of geologic maps — including maps that show geologic hazards — when federal agencies use or share them for regulation or land-use planning. (4) Send the Secretary an annual report that evaluates how federal, state, and university mapping work is progressing, and how well the program is meeting the goals set out in sections 31c through 31f of this title.
