The Secretary of Transportation may arrange training for state maritime academy students in several settings. Training can happen on government-owned vessels, on other vessels with owner permission, or at shipyards and related businesses.
The Secretary of Transportation may provide for the training of students attending a State maritime academy*—
on vessels owned or subsidized by the United States Government;
on other documented vessels, with the permission of the owner; and
in shipyards or plants and with industrial or educational organizations.
