This section defines key terms for the historic light station program. It explains who counts as an "eligible entity" and what a "Federal aid to navigation" is. It also lists what buildings and land make up a "historic light station."
This section defines four terms used in this chapter.
(1) Administrator. "Administrator" means the Administrator of General Services.
(2) Eligible entity. An "eligible entity" is either (A) any federal department or agency*, or (B) a state* department or agency, local government*, nonprofit corporation, educational agency, or community development organization where the light station sits. Groups under (B) only count if they (i) agree to follow the conditions in section 305104 and have those conditions written into the deed, and (ii) can afford to maintain the light station under those same conditions.
(3) Federal aid to navigation. (A) This is any device the United States runs and maintains, outside a vessel or aircraft, that helps a navigator find their position or safe course, or warns of danger. (B) It includes things like a light, lens, lantern, antenna, sound signal, camera, sensor, navigation electronics, power source, or other equipment that goes with such a device.
(4) Historic light station. This term covers the light tower, lighthouse, keeper's house, garages, storage sheds, oil house, fog signal building, boat house, barn, pumphouse, tramhouse support structures, piers, walkways, and the land and related property connected to a historic light station that is itself a historic property*.
In this chapter:
The term “Administrator” means the Administrator of General Services.
The term “eligible entity” means—
any department or agency* of the Federal Government; or
any department or agency of the State* in which a historic light station is located, the local government* of the community in which a historic light station is located, a nonprofit corporation, an educational agency, or a community development organization that—
has agreed to comply with the conditions set forth in section 305104 of this title and to have the conditions recorded with the deed of title to the historic light station; and
is financially able to maintain the historic light station in accordance with the conditions set forth in section 305104 of this title.
The term “Federal aid to navigation” means any device, operated and maintained by the United States, external to a vessel or aircraft, intended to assist a navigator to determine position or safe course, or to warn of dangers or obstructions to navigation.
The term “Federal aid to navigation” includes a light, lens, lantern, antenna, sound signal, camera, sensor, piece of electronic navigation equipment, power source, or other piece of equipment associated with a device described in subparagraph (A).
The term “historic light station” includes the light tower, lighthouse, keeper’s dwelling, garages, storage sheds, oil house, fog signal building, boat house, barn, pumphouse, tramhouse support structures, piers, walkways, underlying and appurtenant land and related real property and improvements associated with a historic light station that is a historic property*.
