14 U.S.C. § 336 — Unmanned system program and autonomous control and computer vision technology project

(a) Unmanned System Program. Within 2 years after this section became law, the Secretary^* had to set up, under the Commandant's control, a program for the Coast Guard to use unmanned systems — based on land, on cutters (Coast Guard ships), or in the air — to make its missions more effective and efficient.

(b) Autonomous Control and Computer Vision Technology Project.
(1) In general. The Commandant^* must run a project retrofitting up to 4 existing Coast Guard small boats already in operational use with: (A) commercially available autonomous-control and computer-vision technology; and (B) sensors and communication tools needed to control the boats, plus technology to help with search-and-rescue, surveillance, and interdiction missions.
(2) Data collection. As part of that project, the Commandant must gather and evaluate real-world operational data from the retrofitted boats to help shape future requirements.
(3) Briefing. Within 180 days after the project finishes, the Commandant must brief the Senate Commerce Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee — in person or in writing — on the project, including an evaluation of the data collected.

(c) Unmanned System Defined. In this section, "unmanned system" means: (1) an unmanned aircraft system, as defined in section 44801 of title 49; (2) an unmanned marine surface system (a robotic boat that stays on the water's surface); and (3) an unmanned marine subsurface system (a robotic vehicle that operates underwater).
