This section assigns the Energy Secretary research and infrastructure duties under the Program. It specifies high-end computing and advanced software support for energy-related science and engineering.
As part of the Program described in subchapter I, the Secretary of Energy must: (1) conduct and support basic and applied networking and information-technology research supporting fundamental research in energy-related science and engineering; and (2) provide computing and networking infrastructure, including: (A) high-end computing systems among the world’s most advanced in performance for solving scientific and engineering problems; and (B) advanced software and applications development for energy-related science and engineering.
As part of the Program described in subchapter I, the Secretary of Energy shall—
conduct and support basic and applied research in networking and information technology to support fundamental research in science and engineering disciplines related to energy applications; and
provide computing and networking infrastructure support, including—
the provision of high-end computing systems that are among the most advanced in the world in terms of performance in solving scientific and engineering problems; and
support for advanced software and applications development for science and engineering disciplines related to energy applications.
