When the Secretary approves assistance to a local organization for a works-of-improvement plan, this section requires notice to the Interior Secretary. It provides for wildlife surveys and recommendations, requires consideration of feasible recommendations, and assigns their cost to Interior funds.

When the Secretary approves assistance to a local organization to prepare a works-of-improvement plan under section 1003: (1) The Secretary must notify the Secretary of the Interior. The Interior Secretary may then make surveys and investigations, prepare a report and recommendations about conserving and developing wildlife resources, and participate in preparing a plan acceptable to the local organization and the Secretary of Agriculture, under arrangements satisfactory to the Agriculture Secretary. (2) The Agriculture Secretary and local organization must give full consideration to recommendations in an Interior report submitted before they agree on a plan. The plan must include technically and economically feasible wildlife works recommended in that report if the local organization and Agriculture Secretary accept and agree to them. If the Interior Secretary asks, the report must accompany the plan when it is submitted to the Agriculture Secretary for approval or sent to Congress through the President. (3) The Interior Secretary must pay the cost of wildlife-resource surveys, investigations, and reports from funds appropriated to the Interior Department.
