This section authorizes cooperation with States and Puerto Rico to protect coastal fish, shellfish, and recreation. It covers jellyfish, other pests, and floating seaweed research.
The Commerce Secretary may cooperate with and assist States in controlling and eliminating jellyfish, commonly called “sea nettles,” and other pests, and in researching control of floating seaweed in coastal waters of the United States and Puerto Rico. This is for conserving and protecting fish and shellfish and promoting and safeguarding water recreation for present and future generations. “Other such pests” is not defined here.
For the purposes of conserving and protecting the fish and shellfish resources in the coastal waters of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and promoting and safeguarding water-based recreation for present and future generations in these waters, the Secretary of Commerce is authorized to cooperate with, and provide assistance to, the States in controlling and eliminating jellyfish, commonly referred to as “sea nettles”, and other such pests and in conducting research for the purposes of controlling floating seaweed in such waters.
