16 U.S.C. § 124 — Jurisdiction by the United States; fugitives from justice

This section gives the United States "sole and exclusive jurisdiction" over the land inside Crater Lake National Park. That means the federal government, not the state, is normally in charge of law inside the park. But the law keeps two rights for the State of Oregon. First, Oregon can still serve civil or criminal legal papers inside the park's boundaries — but only for lawsuits or prosecutions about rights acquired, obligations incurred, or crimes committed in Oregon outside of the park. Second, Oregon keeps the right to tax people and corporations, and their franchises and property, on the land inside the park. All laws that apply to places under the sole and exclusive jurisdiction of the United States also have force and effect inside Crater Lake National Park. Finally, anyone who is a fugitive from justice and takes refuge inside the park is subject to the same laws as a fugitive from justice found anywhere else in the State of Oregon.
