16 U.S.C. § 1674a — Expanded programs

(a) In general. Acting through the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and state cooperative extension services, and consulting state foresters or equivalent officials, school boards, and universities, the Secretary must expand this subchapter’s forestry and natural-resources education programs for private forest owners and managers, public officials, youth, and the general public. The programs must include guidelines for transferring technology. (b) Activities. (1) In expanding the programs, the Secretary must ensure activities promote policies and practices that improve the health, vitality, productivity, economic value, and environmental attributes of United States forest lands. (2) The activities must include: (A) showing and teaching landowners and forest managers multiple-use and sustainable natural-resource management; (B) comprehensive environmental education that helps citizens take environmentally positive actions such as planting trees, recycling, preventing erosion, and managing waste; and (C) educational programs and materials that improve schools’, local governments’, and resource agencies’ ability to give forestry and natural-resources information to young people, environmentally concerned citizens, and action groups.
