16 U.S.C. § 410ccc–21 — Establishment

(a) In general. This part creates the Cane River National Heritage Area ("the heritage area"). (b) Purpose. To recognize the value of the Cane River region, and building on the findings in section 410ccc(a), this part's purpose is to create a heritage area that complements the historical park and supports a culturally sensitive approach to preserving the region's heritage. That includes: (1) recognizing areas important to the nation's heritage and identity; (2) helping preserve and enhance the region's cultural landscape and traditions; (3) giving people who live in this cultural landscape a framework to help with preservation and education; and (4) minimizing the need for the federal government to acquire and manage land. (c) Area included. The heritage area includes: (1) an area roughly one mile on each side of the Cane River, shown on a 1994 map; (2) properties in the Natchitoches National Historic Landmark District covered by cooperative agreements under section 410ccc–2(d); (3) the Los Adaes State Commemorative Area; (4) the Fort Jesup State Commemorative Area; (5) the Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Commemorative Area; and (6) the Kate Chopin House. The heritage area management plan required by section 410ccc–23 will give the final, complete list of all areas and sites included.
