The Secretary can add land to Great Basin National Park by donation, purchase, or exchange, but always needs the owner's consent. Land the Forest Service used to manage inside the park transferred to the Park Service, and Humboldt National Forest's boundary shrank to match.
(a) The Secretary may acquire land or land interests within the park's boundaries by donation, by purchase with donated or government money, or by exchange. But there's a firm rule: none of this land can be acquired without the owner's consent. And if Nevada or one of its local governments owns the land, the Secretary can only get it by donation or exchange — not by purchase.
(b) Before October 27, 1986, some land, water, and related interests within the park's boundaries were managed by the Forest Service, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This subsection transfers all of that to the Secretary's control, to be managed under this subchapter from now on. The boundaries of the Humboldt National Forest are adjusted to reflect this change.
The Secretary may acquire land or interests in land within the boundaries of the park by donation, purchase with donated or appropriated funds, or exchange, but no such lands or interests therein may be acquired without the consent of the owner thereof. Lands owned by the State of Nevada or any political subdivision thereof may be acquired only by donation or exchange.
Lands and waters, and interests therein, within the boundaries of the park which were administered by the Forest Service, United States Department of Agriculture prior to October 27, 1986, are hereby transferred to the administrative jurisdiction of the Secretary to be administered in accordance with this subchapter. The boundaries of the Humboldt National Forest shall be adjusted accordingly.
