16 U.S.C. § 430f–5 — Siege and Battle of Corinth

(a) Purpose. This section exists to create a center that explains the Siege and Battle of Corinth and other Civil War fighting in the region, and to help the public understand how the Corinth Campaign fit into the Civil War's western theater. The Secretary works with state and local governments and private groups and people to do this. (b) Acquisition of property at Corinth, Mississippi. The Secretary must acquire — by donation, by purchase with donated or appropriated funds, or by exchange — land near the Corinth Battlefield in Mississippi that the Secretary decides is necessary to build an interpretive center about the 1862 Siege and Battle of Corinth. (c) Publicly owned land. If the land is owned by the State of Mississippi or one of its political subdivisions, the Secretary may only get it through donation — not purchase or exchange. (d) Interpretive center and marking. (1) The Secretary must build, run, and maintain an interpretive center on the acquired land, to explain the Siege and Battle of Corinth and related historical events to the public. (2) The Secretary may mark sites tied to the Siege and Battle of Corinth National Historic Landmark (designated May 6, 1991), if the Secretary decides those sites are protected by state or local government agencies. (3) The land and the center become part of Shiloh National Military Park, run under the laws that apply to the Park, including the 1916 National Park Service Act and the 1935 historic preservation act. (e) Authorization of appropriations. Congress authorizes $6,000,000 to develop the site under this section.
