16 U.S.C. § 445 — Canyon De Chelly National Monument; establishment; boundaries

This section lets the President of the United States establish the Canyon De Chelly National Monument by presidential proclamation -- but only with the consent of the tribal council of the Navajo Tribe of Indians. The monument sits within the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona. The monument includes all land in Del Muerto Canyon, De Chelly Canyon, and Monument Canyon, plus the canyons that feed into them, plus a strip of land within half a mile of the rims of those canyons. The exact area is described by township and range: unsurveyed townships 4 and 5 north, range 7 west; townships 4, 5, and 6 north, range 8 west; townships 4 and 5 north, range 9 west; and surveyed townships 4 and 5 north, range 6 west; townships 3, 6, and 7 north, range 7 west; township 6 north, range 9 west; and township 5 north, range 10 west -- all measured from the Navajo meridian in Arizona. The total area covers about 83,840 acres.
