The Secretary may pay a reward, from collected fines, to anyone who provides information that leads to a fossil-theft conviction or civil penalty — but not to government employees doing their job. Fossils involved in violations can be seized and may be transferred to schools for education.

(a) Rewards. The Secretary may pay a reward from fines collected under section 470aaa–5 or 470aaa–6, or from appropriated funds, to someone who provides information leading to a civil violation being found or a criminal conviction. The amount follows the Secretary's regulations, or if none exist, up to half the fine collected. If several people gave the information, the reward is split among them. A federal, state, or local government employee cannot get this reward for information or services given while doing their official job. (b) Forfeiture. Any paleontological resource connected to a violation under section 470aaa–5 or 470aaa–6, that is still in someone's possession, can be taken away through civil forfeiture, or through criminal forfeiture upon conviction. (c) Transfer of seized resources. The Secretary may transfer seized resources to federal or non-federal schools for scientific or educational use.
