(a) Objectives and establishments

To provide public outdoor recreation, including fishing and hunting, in a natural setting, enjoyment of certain areas within the Mark Twain National Forest, protection of those areas’ natural, archaeological, and scenic resources, and appropriate resource management, this section establishes the Greer Spring Special Management Area, referred to here as “the special management area.” The Secretary must manage it under this Act and under laws generally applying to National Forest System units, to the extent those laws are consistent with this Act.

The special management area consists of the lands, waters, and interests in them within the area shown on the map called “The Greer Spring Special Management Area.” The Secretary may make minor revisions to its boundary.

(c) Timber harvesting

The Secretary must allow timber harvesting in the special management area only when, in the Secretary’s judgment, it is required to control insects or disease, for public safety, for salvage sales, or to carry out the objectives in subsection (a). To the extent practicable, timber harvesting must use the individual tree selection method.

(d) Hunting and fishing

The Secretary must allow hunting and fishing on lands and waters within the special management area under applicable Federal and State law.

Subject to valid existing rights, lands within the special management area are withdrawn from location, entry, and patent under United States mining laws and from operation of United States mineral and geothermal leasing laws.

(f) Vehicular access

The Secretary may construct and maintain only the roads within the special management area and corridor that are shown on the map. The Secretary must provide access to those roads, or to timber harvesting under subsection (c), in a way that minimizes environmental impact.
