A federal prison chief executive may order certain autopsies or post-mortem operations for specified institutional purposes. This section states the applicable rule.

A federal penal or correctional facility’s chief executive may, under the Director’s rules, order an autopsy and related scientific or medical tests on a deceased inmate when the death involved homicide, suicide, fatal illness or accident, or is unexplained, and the autopsy or test is needed to detect a crime, maintain discipline, protect other inmates’ health or safety, remedy official misconduct, or defend the United States or its employees from civil liability arising from facility administration. To the extent consistent with the autopsy or test, applicable state and local protections for religious beliefs about autopsies must be followed. The officer may also order an autopsy or post-mortem operation, including tissue removal for transplant, if a person authorized under the law of the facility’s State gives written consent.
