2 U.S.C. § 1 — Time for election of Senators

This section sets when states must elect a U.S. Senator. They do it at the regular election held just before the Senator's term ends. That election must also be one where voters pick a U.S. Representative.
This section is a single, undivided provision about the timing of Senate elections.
It applies at the regular election held in a State that comes right before a sitting Senator's term from that State is due to expire. For this rule to apply, that same election must also be one where a Representative to Congress is regularly chosen by law.
At that election, the people of the State must elect a United States Senator. The new Senator's term begins on the 3rd day of January following the election.
At the regular election held in any State next preceding the expiration of the term for which any Senator was elected to represent such State in Congress, at which election a Representative to Congress is regularly by law to be chosen, a United States Senator from said State shall be elected by the people thereof for the term commencing on the 3d day of January next thereafter.
