2 U.S.C. § 179o — Responsibilities and powers of Board

(a) In general The Board reviews films nominated for the National Film Registry and advises the Librarian, as described in section 179m, on adding films to the Registry and on preserving culturally, historically, or artistically significant films. (b) Nomination of films The Board considers nominations from the public and from film-industry groups — guilds and societies representing actors, directors, screenwriters, cinematographers, and other creative workers, plus producers, film critics, archives, preservation groups, and academic film programs. The Board may nominate no more than 25 films per year for the Registry. (c) Powers (1) In general: to do its job, the Board may hold hearings, meet at whatever times and places it needs, and take testimony and evidence, as the Librarian and Board see fit. (2) Service on Foundation: the Librarian must appoint two sitting Board members to also serve as board members of the National Film Preservation Foundation, under section 151703 of title 36.
