2 U.S.C. § 6Reduction of representation

submitted date unrecorded by Congress to r/title-2-THE-CONGRESS · 88 words · no verdicts yet

in plain englishAI-generated · not legal advice

If a state denies or limits voting rights of adult male citizens named in the 14th Amendment, its House seats get cut. The cut doesn't count men denied the vote for rebellion or crime. The reduction matches the share of men actually blocked from voting.

This section enforces part of the 14th Amendment (Article 14, section 2 of the Constitution). If a state denies or limits the right to vote — in any election the amendment covers — for male inhabitants who are 21 years old and U.S. citizens, that state loses some of its representation in the House. The one exception: this doesn't apply to men denied the vote because they took part in a rebellion or committed some other crime. The number of Representatives the state gets is reduced in proportion to how many of these male citizens were wrongly denied the vote, compared to the total number of male citizens 21 or older in that state.

Should any State deny or abridge the right of any of the male inhabitants thereof, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, to vote at any election named in the amendment to the Constitution, article 14, section 2, except for participation in the rebellion or other crime, the number of Representatives apportioned to such State shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall have to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such State.
