21 U.S.C. § 395 — Loan repayment program

(a) In general: Subject to the limit that follows, the Secretary must run a program of contracting with qualified health professionals. Under these contracts, the professional agrees to do research as an FDA employee, and in exchange, the federal government agrees to repay, for each year of that service, up to $20,000 of the professional's education loan principal and interest. The Secretary cannot make one of these agreements with a health professional unless that professional has a large amount of educational loan debt relative to their income, and agrees to work as an FDA employee for at least 3 years. (b) Applicability of certain provisions: This program is connected to the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program, a separate program set up under the Public Health Service Act. Except where it conflicts with subsection (a), the rules for that other program apply to this program the same way they apply to the National Health Service Corps program. (c) Authorization of appropriations: Congress authorized whatever money is necessary to carry out this section, for each of fiscal years 1994 through 1996.
