The State Department must help coordinate with foreign governments, people, and United States air carriers to prepare and transport remains and handle personal effects of citizens who die abroad. The help must include families of citizens killed in terrorism or disasters abroad.
It is State Department policy, under section 2715, to coordinate with foreign governments and people and with United States air carriers about preparing and transporting to the United States the remains of citizens who die abroad and handling their personal effects. The Secretary must ensure that Department rules and guidelines reflect this policy and that this help is provided to families of United States citizens killed in terrorist incidents and disasters abroad.
It is the policy of the Department of State (pursuant to section 2715 of this title) to provide liaison with foreign governments and persons and with United States air carriers concerning arrangements for the preparation and transport to the United States of the remains of citizens who die abroad, as well as the disposition of personal effects. The Secretary of State shall ensure that regulations and guidelines of the Department of State reflect such policy and that such assistance is rendered to the families of United States citizens who are killed in terrorist incidents and disasters abroad.
