submitted 50 years ago by Pub. L. 94-437 to r/title-25-INDIANS · 292 words · no verdicts yet
The Secretary, acting through the Service, must make grants to public or nonprofit private health or educational entities, Indian tribes, or tribal organizations. The grants help identify Indians who may enter health-profession education, help them qualify and enroll, provide financial-aid information, and support other programs that help them enroll in, pursue, and complete that education.
(a) Grants for education and training The Secretary*, acting through the Service*, must make grants to public or nonprofit private health or educational entities, Indian tribes, or tribal organizations. The grants help those entities pay the costs of the following: (1) Finding Indians who may be able to study or train for the health professions and encouraging and helping them— (A) enroll in courses of study in those health professions; or (B) if they do not qualify to enroll in one of those courses, complete the postsecondary education or training needed to qualify for enrollment; (2) making available information about existing financial-aid sources for Indians enrolled in a course described in paragraph (1), or undertaking training needed to qualify for enrollment in such a course; or (3) establishing other programs that the Secretary decides will improve and make easier Indians’ enrollment in, and later pursuit and completion of, the courses described in paragraph (1). This section does not define “health professions.” (b) Application for grant; submittal and approval; preference; payment (1) No grant may be made under this section unless an application has been submitted to and approved by the Secretary. The application must use the form, submission method, and information that the Secretary prescribes by regulation. The Secretary must give preference to applications submitted by Indian tribes or tribal organizations. (2) The Secretary decides the amount of each grant. Grant payments may be made in advance or as reimbursement, at the times and under the conditions the Secretary finds necessary.
The Secretary*, acting through the Service*, shall make grants to public or nonprofit private health or educational entities or Indian tribes or tribal organizations to assist such entities in meeting the costs of—
identifying Indians with a potential for education or training in the health professions and encouraging and assisting them—
to enroll in courses of study in such health professions; or
if they are not qualified to enroll in any such courses of study, to undertake such postsecondary education or training as may be required to qualify them for enrollment;
publicizing existing sources of financial aid available to Indians enrolled in any course of study referred to in paragraph (1) of this subsection or who are undertaking training necessary to qualify them to enroll in any such course of study; or
establishing other programs which the Secretary determines will enhance and facilitate the enrollment of Indians in, and the subsequent pursuit and completion by them of, courses of study referred to in paragraph (1) of this subsection.
No grant may be made under this section unless an application therefor has been submitted to, and approved by, the Secretary. Such application shall be in such form, submitted in such manner, and contain such information, as the Secretary shall by regulation prescribe. The Secretary shall give a preference to applications submitted by Indian tribes or tribal organizations.
The amount of any grant under this section shall be determined by the Secretary. Payments pursuant to grants under this section may be made in advance or by way of reimbursement, and at such intervals and on such conditions as the Secretary finds necessary.
