25 U.S.C. § 4001 — Definitions

This chapter defines six terms: Special Trustee, Indian tribe, Secretary, Office, Bureau, and Department. The definitions point to the specified federal offices, laws, and eligible Native communities.
For this chapter: (1) “Special Trustee” means the Special Trustee for American Indians appointed under section 4042. (2) “Indian tribe” means an Indian tribe, band, nation, or other organized group or community, including an Alaska Native village or regional or village corporation defined in or established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, that the United States recognizes as eligible for special Indian programs and services because of its status as Indian. (3) “Secretary” means the Secretary of the Interior. (4) “Office” means the Office of Special Trustee for American Indians established by section 4042. (5) “Bureau” means the Bureau of Indian Affairs within the Interior Department. (6) “Department” means the Interior Department. This section does not otherwise define the quoted terms.
For the purposes of this chapter:
The term “Special Trustee” means the Special Trustee for American Indians appointed under section 4042 of this title.
The term “Indian tribe” means any Indian tribe, band, nation, or other organized group or community, including any Alaska Native village or regional or village corporation as defined in or established pursuant to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (85 Stat. 688) [43 U.S.C. 1601 et seq.], which is recognized as eligible for the special programs and services provided by the United States to Indians because of their status as Indians.
The term “Secretary” means the Secretary of the Interior.
The term “Office” means the Office of Special Trustee for American Indians established by section 4042 of this title.
The term “Bureau” means the Bureau of Indian Affairs within the Department of the Interior.
The term “Department” means the Department of the Interior.
