25 U.S.C. § 62 — Discontinuance and transfer of agencies

This section gives the President two powers over Indian agencies. First, he may discontinue (close down) any Indian agency whenever he judges it expedient — meaning whenever he thinks it is a wise or useful thing to do. He does not need a special reason approved by anyone else. Second, instead of closing an agency, he may transfer it. That means moving it from the place or tribe that a law originally assigned it to, to a different place or tribe. He can do this whenever the public service requires it — that is, whenever moving the agency would better serve government needs.
