26 U.S.C. § 7503Time for performance of acts where last day falls on Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday

If a tax deadline falls on a weekend or legal holiday, you get extra time. The act is timely if done on the next day that isn't one of those. "Legal holiday" means a D.C. holiday, or a state holiday for offices outside D.C.

When the last day for doing something under the tax laws falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, you don't have to do it that day. You can do it on the next day that isn't a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, and it still counts as on time. The "last day" includes any extension of time you were given. "Legal holiday" normally means a legal holiday in the District of Columbia. But if you have to file a return or document, or do some other required act, at an IRS office or other U.S. government office that is outside D.C. but within an internal revenue district, "legal holiday" also includes a statewide legal holiday in the state where that office is located.
