28 U.S.C. § 414 — Transmittal of books to successors

This section covers government publications and law books given to certain federal officials: justices, judges, clerks of court, and United States attorneys — in the United States and its territories and possessions — as well as other officers of the United States or of a federal agency. When one of these officials leaves office, all such publications and law books must be passed on to the person who takes over that job. Most permanent or bound books and publications given out under this chapter must remain the property of the United States. The one exception is books furnished to the Library of Congress for international exchange — those are not covered by this rule. Every other book covered by this rule must be plainly marked "The Property of the United States."
