3 U.S.C. § 109 — Public property in and belonging to the Executive Residence at the White House

This section is about who takes care of the White House's furniture and other public property, and how that property gets tracked. Custody. The President chooses an employee of the Executive Residence — the steward, the housekeeper, or someone else the President designates — to have charge and custody of the plate (fine dishware), furniture, and other public property inside the Executive Residence. That employee answers to the President and is responsible for this property. Annual inventory. Every June, the Director of the National Park Service must direct a complete inventory of all the public property in and belonging to the Executive Residence. The inventory must show, for each item, when it was purchased, what it cost, its condition, and its final disposition (what eventually happened to it). Approval and storage. The inventory then goes to the President for approval. After that, it's kept on file in the office of the Director of the National Park Service, which must also give a copy to the steward, housekeeper, or other responsible employee.
