3 U.S.C. § 6 — Duties of Archivist

The Archivist receives certificates naming each state's appointed presidential electors, under section 5. The Archivist must keep them for one year as public records. Anyone can inspect these certificates.
This section covers what the Archivist of the United States must do with the certificates of ascertainment — the documents naming each state's appointed presidential electors — that come in under section 5. The Archivist must do three things with them: (1) preserve them for one year; (2) treat them as part of that office's public records; and (3) keep them open for public inspection.
The certificates of ascertainment of appointment of electors received by the Archivist of the United States under section 5 shall—
be preserved for one year;
be a part of the public records of such office; and
be open to public inspection.
