33 U.S.C. § 3002 — Definitions

(a) Title 10 definitions. Unless subsection (b) provides otherwise, the definitions in section 101 of title 10 apply to this chapter. (b) Additional definitions. (1) “Active duty” means full-time duty in a uniformed service’s active service. (2) “Grade” means a step or degree on a graduated office or rank scale established and designated by law or regulation. (3) “Officer” means an officer of the commissioned corps. (4) “Officer candidate” means a person enrolled in the Administration’s basic officer training program who is being considered for appointment as an officer under section 3021(a)(2)(A). (5) “Flag officer” means an officer serving in, or holding the grade of, vice admiral, rear admiral, or rear admiral (lower half). (6) “Secretary” means the Secretary of Commerce. (7) “Administration” means the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. (8) “Under Secretary” means the Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere.
