33 U.S.C. § 605a — Mississippi River forecasting improvements

(1) In general. In consultation, as applicable, with the Secretary of the department in which the Coast Guard operates, the USGS Director, the NOAA Administrator, and the National Weather Service Director, the Secretary must improve Mississippi River forecasting by: (A) updating technology on the river and tributaries through (i) more automated river gauges, (ii) rehabilitating existing automated and manual gauges, and (iii) replacing manual gauges with automated gauges when necessary; (B) building more sedimentation ranges; and (C) placing more automatic identification system base stations at gauge sites. (2) Prioritization. The Secretary must prioritize river sections where better and more reliable information would have the greatest effect on maintaining navigation. (3) Report. Within one year after June 10, 2014, the Secretary must report to Congress and make public a report on these activities.
