in plain englishAI-generated · not legal advice

Anyone who gets a scholarship must sign an agreement with the Director. They promise to work as a law enforcement officer in that state after finishing school, or repay the money. The required work period is one month for each credit hour funded, between six months and two years.

(a) In general. Anyone who receives a scholarship under this part must sign an agreement with the Director. (b) Contents. That agreement must: (1) Promise that, after finishing the degree — associate, bachelor's, or graduate — the recipient will work in a law enforcement job in the state that gave the scholarship, for the length of time described in subsection (c). (2) Promise that the recipient will repay the whole scholarship, on terms the Director sets, if the recipient does not meet the agreement's requirements. This repayment rule does not apply if the recipient (A) dies; (B) becomes physically or emotionally disabled, proven by a sworn statement from a qualified doctor; or (C) has the debt discharged in bankruptcy. (3) Spell out the terms under which the recipient may instead take a law enforcement job in a different state. (c) Service obligation. (1) In general. Except as described in paragraph (2), a scholarship recipient must work in a law enforcement job in the state that gave the scholarship for one month for every credit hour the scholarship paid for. (2) Special rule. No matter how the math in paragraph (1) works out, the recipient must work at least 6 months, but never more than 2 years.
