34 U.S.C. § 20501 — National coordination of AMBER Alert communications network

(a) Appointing a coordinator. The Attorney General must assign a Department of Justice officer to serve as the national coordinator of the AMBER Alert communications network for abducted children, called the AMBER Alert Coordinator. (b) The Coordinator's duties. The Coordinator must (1) work to close gaps in the network, including at places like airports, ports, and border crossings; (2) help states, territories, and tribal governments create more local AMBER plans; (3) help them properly coordinate different parts of the network regionally; and (4) act as the single nationwide contact point for developing the network and coordinating regional alerts. (c) Working with the FBI. When carrying out these duties, the Coordinator must notify and consult with the FBI Director about every child abduction that triggers an AMBER Alert. (d) Working with other agencies. The Coordinator must cooperate with the Secretary of Transportation, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and the FCC in carrying out this section. (e) Reporting. By March 1, 2005, the Coordinator, working with the Secretary of Transportation, must send Congress a report on the Coordinator's activities and on how effective each state's AMBER plan has been.
