This law defines terms for the Blue Alert program, which shares information about law enforcement officers who are hurt, killed, missing, or threatened. It defines "Coordinator," "Blue Alert," "Blue Alert plan," "law enforcement officer," "network," and "State."
(1) Coordinator. "Coordinator" means the Blue Alert Coordinator at the Department of Justice, chosen under section 50503(a) of this title.
(2) Blue Alert. "Blue Alert" means information sent through the network about: (A) a law enforcement officer seriously hurt or killed on duty; (B) an officer missing while doing official duties; or (C) an imminent, credible threat that someone intends to seriously hurt or kill a law enforcement officer.
(3) Blue Alert plan. "Blue Alert plan" means a state's, local government's, or federal agency's plan — made as part of the network — for spreading information received as a Blue Alert.
(4) Law enforcement officer. "Law enforcement officer" has the same meaning given in section 10284 of this title.
(5) Network. "Network" means the Blue Alert communications network the Attorney General sets up under section 50502 of this title.
(6) State. "State" means each of the 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
In this chapter:
The term “Coordinator” means the Blue Alert Coordinator of the Department of Justice designated under section 50503(a) of this title.
The term “Blue Alert” means information sent through the network relating to—
the serious injury or death of a law enforcement officer in the line of duty;
an officer who is missing in connection with the officer’s official duties; or
an imminent and credible threat that an individual intends to cause the serious injury or death of a law enforcement officer.
The term “Blue Alert plan” means the plan of a State, unit of local government, or Federal agency participating in the network for the dissemination of information received as a Blue Alert.
The term “law enforcement officer” shall have the same meaning as in section 10284 of this title.
The term “network” means the Blue Alert communications network established by the Attorney General under section 50502 of this title.
The term “State” means each of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
