38 U.S.C. § 1708 — Temporary lodging

(a) The Secretary^* may provide temporary lodging in a Fisher house or other suitable facility to people in subsection (b) in connection with a veteran’s examination, treatment, or care under this chapter, or, as subsection (e)(5) provides, benefits under this title. (b) The people are (1) a veteran^* who must travel a significant distance for title 38 care or services and (2) a family member or another person accompanying the veteran who provides equivalent familial support. (c) "Fisher house" means a housing facility (1) at or near a Department^* medical facility, (2) available temporarily for that facility’s patients and subsection (b)(2) people, and (3) built by and donated to the Secretary by the Zachary and Elizabeth M. Fisher Armed Services Foundation. (d) The Secretary may charge for lodging. Charges go to the medical services^* account and remain available until spent to provide lodging. (e) The Secretary must issue regulations including (1) limits on lodging duration; (2) charge standards and criteria; (3) criteria for who is considered accompanying a veteran; (4) criteria for using temporary-lodging premises; and (5) any other limits, conditions, and priorities the Secretary considers appropriate.
