38 U.S.C. § 5504 — Administration of trust funds

Cash in patients' personal-funds accounts and incompetent-beneficiary trust funds, plus money meant for those funds, may be deposited in Treasury deposit-fund accounts and used for authorized payments. Balances belonging to people whose locations are unknown for more than a year are transferred and disposed of under title 31, section 1322(a).
Cash balances in patients' personal funds and in trust funds for incompetent beneficiaries that the Secretary* administers, and money properly meant for those funds, may respectively be deposited in United States Treasury deposit-fund accounts. Once deposited, the balances and deposits may be disbursed for properly authorized purposes. If a balance has been held by the United States Treasurer for more than one year and belongs to someone whose whereabouts are unknown, it must be transferred and disposed of as directed by title 31, section 1322(a).
All cash balances in the personal funds of patients and the funds due incompetent beneficiaries trust funds administered by the Secretary*, and all moneys received which are properly for deposit into these funds, may be deposited, respectively, into deposit fund accounts with the United States Treasury and such balances and deposits shall thereupon be available for disbursement for properly authorized purposes. When any balances have been on deposit with the Treasurer of the United States for more than one year and represent moneys belonging to individuals whose whereabouts are unknown, they shall be transferred and disposed of as directed in section 1322(a) of title 31.
