42 U.S.C. § 211c — Promotion credit for medical officers in assistant grade

This section applies to a medical officer of the Regular Corps of the Public Health Service who either (1)(A) was appointed to the assistant grade in the Regular Corps and has served there continuously since that appointment, or (1)(B) is appointed to the assistant grade in the future, and who (2) had already completed, or will have completed, a medical internship by the date of that appointment. That officer is credited with one extra year for purposes of promotion and seniority in grade. But this credit isn't given if the officer has received, or will receive, similar credit for the same internship under some other provision of law. For an officer who was on active duty on the effective date of this section and who is entitled to this credit, the extra year gets added to whatever promotion and seniority-in-grade credit they were already credited with as of that date.
