42 U.S.C. § 274f–3 — Studies relating to organ donation and the recovery, preservation, and transportation of organs

(a) Development of supportive information: Acting through the Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Secretary must develop scientific evidence supporting efforts to increase organ donation and improve how organs are recovered, preserved, and transported. (b) Activities: To do this, the Secretary must: (1) run or support research testing whether interventions, technologies, or other activities make existing organ donation practice more effective, efficient, or higher quality; (2) support periodic reviews of scientific literature, helping professional societies keep their clinical practice guidelines up to date with the latest findings; (3) make sure the evidence from this research is easy for the organ procurement workforce to access; and (4) work with professional societies and the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network to develop evidence and promote adopting proven practices. (c) Research and dissemination: Acting through the Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality as appropriate, the Secretary must support research and share findings to: (1) develop a uniform clinical vocabulary for organ recovery; (2) apply information technology and telecommunications to support organ procurement organizations' clinical work; (3) improve the skills of the organ procurement workforce in quality-improvement work; and (4) assess specific technologies for organ recovery, preservation, and transportation. (d) Authorization of appropriations: $2,000,000 is authorized for fiscal year 2005, and whatever sums are necessary for fiscal years 2006 through 2009.
