42 U.S.C. § 285a–1 — Cancer control programs

The Director of the Institute must set up and support programs for detecting, diagnosing, preventing, and treating cancer, and for rehabilitation and counseling related to cancer. These programs must include three types of activities: (1) Local education and demonstration programs, including networks of such programs, that share research results and information with physicians and other health professionals who treat cancer patients. This information must cover (A) detecting, diagnosing, preventing, and treating cancer; (B) ongoing care for cancer patients and their families; and (C) rehabilitation and counseling related to cancer. (2) Demonstration and education programs for health-profession students and health professionals, covering (A) effective ways to prevent and catch cancer early, and to identify people at high risk of getting cancer, and (B) better ways to refer patients to the right centers for early diagnosis and treatment. (3) New ways to give the general public information about preventing, catching early, diagnosing, treating, and controlling cancer — and information about cancer methods, drugs, and devices that have not been approved or do not work.
