The Institute's Director must expand and coordinate research on heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases in women, coordinating with other NIH institutes. This research covers why these diseases are common in women (including Black women and other minorities), their biology, and differences between men and women. It also covers better diagnosis and treatment, prevention, and public and provider education on risk factors like smoking, obesity, cholesterol, and inactivity.

(a) In general. The Director must expand, intensify, and coordinate the Institute's research on heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases in women. (b) Coordination with other institutes. The Director must coordinate this work with similar work by other national research institutes and NIH agencies that also deal with cardiovascular disease in women. (c) Certain programs. In doing this, the Director must research, or support research on, understanding the causes of cardiovascular disease in women and developing ways to prevent it. This includes: (1) research into why heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases are common in women, including Black women and other racial or ethnic minority women; (2) basic research on the causes of cardiovascular disease in women; (3) studies of how often these diseases occur and how they progress, and how they differ between men and women and among racial and ethnic groups; (4) developing safe, efficient, cost-effective ways to diagnose women suspected of having ischemic heart disease; (5) clinical research to develop and test new treatments for women, including rehabilitation; (6) studies on preventing cardiovascular disease in women, including controlling blood pressure, lipids, and obesity; and (7) information and education programs for patients and health care providers on cardiovascular risk factors in women, on the importance of preventing or controlling those risk factors, and on timely diagnosis and treatment — including education on improving risk factors like smoking, obesity, high cholesterol, and lack of exercise.
